Alright, it’s time for me to admit I was wrong.
Last year, I dismissed the idea of Microsoft making its own Arm chip. I was harsh in my criticism of Windows-on-Arm, based on the few poor examples on the market.
But that wouldn’t be honest. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite SoC in the Surface Pro 11 was co-developed by Microsoft. This chip is designed specifically for a new generation of Copilot+ AI PCs. The Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are leading this innovation. Functionally, it’s different from Apple’s approach. Substantively, it’s similar but better. The Surface Pro 11 exemplifies this new wave of laptops.
Built to do the impossible
With that out of the way, the Microsoft Surface Pro 11 is my favorite laptop of the year. I don’t foresee any upcoming laptops surpassing it. I’ve reviewed dozens of laptops in my four-plus years at TechRadar. The Surface Pro 11 is the one I’d choose for work travel or working outside home or office.
Its incredible design, gorgeous display, and all-day battery life make it a top contender. The Surface Pro 11 rivals the iPad Pro and offers more functionality with its full Windows 11 OS.
While its performance may trail the latest iPad Pro with Apple M4, it remains competitive. The Surface Pro 11 successfully ran all my benchmark tests, unlike a MacBook or iPad. It has no significant weaknesses for most users.
Its gaming performance is weak, but comparable to the MacBook Air and other ultrabooks. The Surface Pro 11 truly excels in design and battery life. It’s the best-looking detachable laptop, featuring a 2.8K OLED display with superior color accuracy, a 1440p webcam for better framing, and a solid, lightweight build.
In terms of battery life, it meets Microsoft’s 14-hour claim and reached nearly 15 hours in video playback tests. This is impressive for an OLED laptop and highlights Arm architecture’s power efficiency.
Overall, the Surface Pro 11 exceeds expectations and performs exceptionally well. As more Arm apps and AI features emerge, this laptop will only improve over time. It’s not perfect, but it’s a phenomenal device poised to get even better.
